Industrial Co-operatives # SFURTI


The General Manager, District Industries center is the Implementing Agency (IA) for the Implementation of coir under SFURTI (Scheme of funds for Regeneration of Traditional Industries ) Periyakulam Coir cluster is one of the 26 coir clusters being developed nation wide and one of the six coir clusters in Tamil Nadu.

It is a scheme of ministry of Agro and Rural Industries, Government of India ,having the Objectives.
i. To develop clusters of Traditional Industries in 5 years commencing 2005-06.
ii. To make the Traditional Industries more competitive with marker driven, profitable and sustained employment for the artisans & rural entrepreneurs.
iii. To strengthen the local government of the cluster with stuke holders participations.
iv. To build innovated and traditional skills, improved technologies, advanced processes, market intelligence and new models of public - private partnership so as replicate
the model to other clusters.

The basic critesion for the selection of the cluster is benefit to around 500 families for the purpose of implementation, the coin Board is the Nodal Agency (NA) and GM, DIC, Theni is the Implementing Agency (IA). The technical support arise from the ni-MSME, Hyderabad who is the Technical agency (TA) for the implementation of the scheme at the field ,a cluster development Agent (CDA) has been appointed.

At the Government level the SSC (Scheme Steering committee) Acaded by the secretary, SSI & ARI and at the district level CDCG (cluster development coordination group) headed by the district collector co ordinate & support the scheme.

The scheme components include

  • Capacity building by way of training etc.
  • Market promotion & development.
  • Product design & development intervention.
  • Establishment of a common facility centre (CFC)and
  • Servey and atudies.

Except for the CFC establishment the outlay available for all activities are extended as grant for establishment of CFC (for total on may of Rs.30.00lakhs) 75%is given as grand with balance to be matched by the beneficiaries. Government of Tamil Nadu has extended help by snatching the 25% ( to be collected from the beneficiaries ) as grant.
In Periyakulam coin cluster ,the capacity building works has been accomplished by imparting training in coin twisting, coir matt making pith manure making, handicrafts making etc as to benefit majority of the cluster beneficiaries. The work of building common facility centre is under way and is likely to be completed by June 2009 at Sengulathupatti hear Periyakulam, Theni district.
