Janelle Monáe's LBD Had Two Strategically Placed Bejewelled Brooches
The G.O.A.T. did it again last night, becoming the first athlete to receive the Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). And the record-breaking athlete proved deserving of the honour with a stunning black sequined gown.
The multi-hyphenate came to the 2023 CFDA Awards on Monday night in a custom-wrapped Lincoln Navigator that matched her custom black sequined gown designed by CFDA Chairman Thom Browne.
With its plunging sweetheart neckline, floor-skimming train, and enormous pearl-adorned puffy statement sleeves, the design icon's sleek black dress was everything but dull. Serena wore David Yurman jewellery, including a "Fleur de Mer" pavé diamond necklace and pearl and pavé cable drop earrings.
Serena chose a gold glittery eye shadow with feathery lashes and a pink matte pout for her glam, and she wore her hair in a low braided ponytail entwined with the iconic Browne ribbon.
"I've used fashion to express myself since I was a little girl — fashion gave me the confidence to step on the court and own who I was, and where I knew I was going," Williams told the CFDA prior to the event.
Following in the footsteps of former awardees Zendaya, Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé, and Rihanna, CFDA chairman Thom Browne dubbed her "the ultimate example of individuality in everything she does."
